23rd street

This 4,000-square-foot Queen Anne Victorian, complete with a detached in-law unit in San Francisco, was in dire need of attention. It had changed hands after suffering significant fire damage following the completion of a remodel by William Duff Architects. The new homeowners turned to LittleBig Design (operating under the name Benjamin Schaefer Architect) to restore the house to its former glory. While we retained certain elements of the previous design, we made alterations to align with the new owner's preferences.

Collaborating with Maslow Loop for interior design, we conceived a completely new interior characterized by serene, interconnected spaces. At the rear, we rejuvenated the property with a deck and stairs that linked the modernized kitchen and dining room (the central hub of the family's daily activities) to a lower-level backyard featuring a redwood deck. Inside, we introduced new stained wood cabinets and finishes throughout the home, complementing the natural material palette. An expansive family room was reimagined into a sleeping suite, offering comfortable accommodation for visitors.

Lastly, we transformed the in-law cottage into a versatile workspace and recreation area, which also serves as a guest suite complete with cooking facilities. To enhance its connection with the rear yard, we installed accordion glass doors, allowing the cottage to open up and embrace the outdoor space.

LittleBig Design served as architect of record and Maslow Loop provided interior design for the post-fire remodel.

William Duff Architects served as Architect of Record, Stephanie Klein provided Interior Design, andBenjamin Schaefer Architect provided Owner Representation services for the pre-fire remodel.
